Abdul El-Sayed is already reaching for the biggest megaphone in Democratic politics: the Michigan Senate nominee confirmed he spoke with Barack Obama after his narrow primary win and said he hopes the former president hits the campaign trail with him this fall. The call, El-Sayed said, was “warm and inspiring,” a signal that Michigan’s race is being cast as a key front in the fight to “hold Trump accountable” and win back the Senate. His victory over Rep. Haley Stevens has revived a national argument over the party’s direction, with El-Sayed backed by Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna.
