TEACHERS’ UNIONS HOST WEBINAR ON TEACHING TODDLERS THE JOY OF PROTEST
A webinar hosted by the Chicago Teachers’ Union, the National Education Association, and the Zinn Education Project has stirred up fresh alarm over whether “social justice” is being taught so hard it’s practically wearing a union badge. In an April 2 “curriculum build” aimed at promoting May Day activism, presenters talked about bringing protest-minded lessons into classrooms and even suggested not being shy about introducing activism, workers’ rights, anti-racism, pro-LGBTQIA+ issues, and immigration rights to children as young as three. One Chicago history teacher floated May Day as a “dress rehearsal” for future no-school, no-work actions, which is the kind of thing that makes watchdogs reach for the popcorn and the panic button at the same time.

West Virginia Day is a state holiday in West Virginia to celebrate its joining the Union in 1863 as the 35th state. The creation of the state was a result of the Civil War. The settlers of western Virginia defied the state's vote to secede from the Union, and on June 20 West Virginia formally entered the Union as an anti-slave state. The day is marked with ceremonies at the state capitol in Charleston and at the West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling. It was there that the conventions were held to declare West Virginia's independence from Virginia.
