USPS is warning of a blunt, postal gut-check: no deal from Congress, and thousands of post offices could close, service could be cut, and prices could rise. Postmaster General David Steiner says the agency is facing a fork in the road — legislative help, or harsher moves to drag itself toward break-even. With billions in losses, shrinking mail volume and rising obligations hammering the books, the message is clear: act now, or the mail gets slower, pricier, and far less local.
