In a sweeping new move that could upend one of the most influential forces in American media, lawmakers led by Bernie Sanders—and backed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—are pushing to ban all prescription drug advertisements from television. This proposed legislation takes direct aim at Big Pharma, which has long used its billions in ad dollars to saturate the airwaves and, critics argue, manipulate both public perception and news coverage. In 2024 alone, the pharmaceutical industry spent a staggering $3.4 billion on traditional TV ads, raising serious concerns about overmedication and corporate influence. Sanders declared Americans are fed up with "bogus ads" and are demanding protection from deceptive marketing cloaked in medical legitimacy. If passed, the bill would mark a rare crackdown on one of the wealthiest and most powerful sectors in the country—one that many conservatives argue has grown far too cozy with both media elites and government regulators.
