Brace yourself for a shock, but pediatric sexual mutilation may not cause happiness.
A study published on April 4 in the Nordic medical journal Acta Paediatrica shows that adolescents who are medically “transitioned” into a new gender identity become far more likely to spiral down into psychological crisis. The paper, “Psychiatric Morbidity Among Adolescents and Young Adults Who Contacted Specialised Gender Identity Services in Finland in 1996–2019: A Register Study,” uses a feature of Finland’s unique hybrid medical system to track outcomes following pediatric sex change procedures: each citizen has “an 11-digit personal identification number” for medical purposes. Medical care for citizens is closely tracked through a system of databases…
Well, it turns out Finland’s famously tidy little numbers-and-databases paradise can also do what activist slogans, glossy human-interest pieces, and every “just trust the science” press release in the zip code would rather not: follow the paperwork all the way to the psychiatric waiting room. Using the country’s exquisitely organized medical ledger—because nothing says modern compassion like an 11-digit personal ID number—the researchers tracked adolescents who underwent medical gender reassignment and found psychiatric morbidity rising from 9.8% to 60.7% in feminising cases and from 21.6% to 54.5% in masculinising cases, which is a pretty brisk little climb for a procedure sold, in the usual media theater, as the emotional equivalent of a sunrise. In other words, the results suggest that when bureaucracies get very serious about reinventing children, the children sometimes end up needing a lot more serious help afterward.
