WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday takes up a major Trump administration push to strip legal protection from thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants, a move that could clear the way for deportation threats against about 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians as TPS now stands in place for the moment. At stake is far more than two countries: a ruling for the administration could strengthen its broader effort to end temporary protected status for migrants from places including El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal and Afghanistan, and ripple through fights involving Somalia, Myanmar and Ethiopia. The government says former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s TPS revocations are not subject to court review, while opponents warn the case could lock in a sweeping power to erase protections with the stroke of a pen.
