Security in Ecuador has deteriorated in recent years. The Andean nation has become a major hub for cocaine trafficking.

The situation took a dramatic turn in January 2024, when gangs stormed a TV station, taking staff hostage during a live broadcast and launched a wave of violence that prompted President Daniel Noboa to declare a state of emergency.

Since President Donald Trump took office, the U.S. has ramped up efforts to disrupt drug trafficking from the Southern Hemisphere, carrying out around 45 strikes against smuggling vessels and killing over 150 people, including a high-profile raid in Venezuela aiming to capture President Nicolas Maduro on drug charges. Meanwhile, Ecuador has emerged as a key cocaine transit hub amid worsening security, culminating in a violent gang takeover of a TV station in January 2024 that forced President Daniel Noboa to declare a state of emergency and sparked an ongoing low-level armed conflict as the government struggles to regain control.
