Senate Republicans fled town Saturday for August recess without delivering Trump’s SAVE America Act, a fresh blow to the president’s election-integrity push and a sign of just how badly the votes were lacking. The planned $95 billion reconciliation package collapsed late Friday after Sens. Ron Johnson, Mike Lee and Rick Scott stood down, forcing Republicans to settle for a separate photo ID vote that Democrats shot down 52-0—well short of the 60 needed. Trump had pressed hard for action, but Majority Leader John Thune refused to scrap the break, leaving the White House empty-handed on a priority tied to elections, Iran funding and farm aid.
