Tensions exploded outside Spain’s Moncloa Palace Saturday as a small group of protesters tried to smash through barriers around Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s residence during a massive anti-government rally demanding his resignation over a string of corruption scandals. Police detained masked demonstrators as tens of thousands flooded Madrid for the “March for Dignity,” waving Spanish flags and banners branding the Socialists a “mafia,” while opposition figures from the People’s Party and Vox joined the largely peaceful march. The pressure on Sánchez deepened this week after a Spanish court said former Socialist premier José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was under investigation for alleged influence-peddling and money laundering — a fresh hit to a government already on the ropes.
