Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAiD) program, launched in 2016 and recently expanded to include those without a foreseeable death and soon mental illness patients, saw thousands choosing euthanasia within a day of approval, with 30 percent of 219 deaths in Ontario alone in 2023 happening on the same day; a troubling case emerged where an elderly woman, Mrs B, who faced severe complications after heart surgery and opted for palliative care, was euthanized despite withdrawing her request the day before, highlighting ongoing concerns about the program’s implementation.
