In a stunning admission of past governmental failure, South Australia has finally enacted what should have been a basic moral imperative: banning child sex offenders from working alongside children. After horrifying revelations that a convicted pedophile was allowed to manage minors at McDonald’s and continue working near children even after more offenses, Premier Peter Malinauskas tried to claim victory with a chipper TikTok announcement. But many Australians aren’t celebrating—they’re furious this “common sense” protection wasn’t already in place. The new law, which also prevents individuals merely charged with such heinous crimes from working near child employees, comes too late for many, raising urgent questions about just how low the bar for child safety has been set in the name of political complacency. For a nation that prides itself on protecting the innocent, this belated measure is less a triumph and more a shameful course correction.
