A conservative legal group is demanding a federal criminal probe into Colorado officials over the jailing of Tina Peters, the Trump-aligned former county clerk convicted for leaking voting machine data as part of her push on election fraud claims. The Article III Project told DOJ the state “severely, unconstitutionally, and criminally” punished Peters for her protected views, naming a who’s who of Colorado power players — including Judge Matthew Barrett, AG Phil Weiser and Secretary of State Jena Griswold — as possible conspirators. Polis has already commuted Peters’ nine-year sentence, and an appeals court said Barrett improperly considered her free-speech rights when sentencing her. Now the fight is shifting from state court to Washington, with the question no longer just what happened to Peters, but whether Colorado officials crossed a constitutional line.
