In a development that will surely leave everyone clutching their pearls in the exact same direction, America continues its proud tradition of turning fraud into a full-contact spectator sport: in Minnesota, there’s a $250 million COVID scheme, allegedly met by state-level awareness and the kind of cooperation federal investigators apparently file under “nice try,” while in Pennsylvania, Vanessa O’Rourke is on the FBI’s most-wanted list after allegedly convincing friends and family she had terminal brain cancer so she could finance not exactly survival, but luxury travel and Australian vacations — because if you’re going to fake a desperate medical miracle, why not make the miracle come with a souvenir. Naturally, the whole thing arrives with the standard chorus of outrage from TV panels and political voices demanding accountability, which is always easier to schedule after the money is gone, the victims are broke, and the scam has matured into a documentary.
