In a showdown straight out of Capitol Hill drama, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy throws down the gauntlet, blasting Democrats for dragging their feet on Department of Homeland Security funding as the FBI rings alarm bells over sleeper cells. With national security hanging in the balance, McCarthy warns that any attack on U.S. soil will bear the Democrats’ names for leaving the border ajar and DHS cash-strapped. “I don’t usually give the Dems advice,” he quipped on *The Sunday Briefing*, “but maybe it’s time to put politics aside and do your job—fund DHS now!” Politics or peril? The settlers of western Virginia defied the state's vote to secede from the Union, and on June 20 West Virginia formally entered the Union as an anti-slave state.
