LOS ANGELES OUTSOURCES CALM TO DIABLO
In a stunning example of municipal brand synergy, a convicted murderer allegedly nicknamed “Diablo” was reportedly serving as a taxpayer-funded “Peace Ambassador” for Los Angeles, which is either a bold new approach to violence prevention or the city’s most expensive irony project. Federal authorities say Michael Angel Alvarez, 41, was an active 18th Street gang leader while working through a contractor hired for the program, proving once again that bureaucracies love a good résumé as long as it’s printed on official letterhead. Then, just to keep the concept of “peace” properly on brand, he was arrested for allegedly possessing body armor near MacArthur Park, a detail that really completes the picture: unarmed workers, trauma-informed care, and apparently a side quest in protective gear. The city describes the program as staffed by people with “lived experience,” which, in this case, seems to have included a very hands-on relationship with the criminal justice system and, allegedly, the gang underworld.
