A storm is brewing in the world of so-called miracle weight loss injections, as the U.K.'s medicines watchdog is now investigating a disturbing surge in reports of pancreatic damage tied to the wildly popular GLP-1 drugs, used for weight loss and diabetes treatment. With hundreds of patients suffering from acute and chronic pancreatitis since these drugs hit the market, serious questions are being raised about just how safe these headline-grabbing treatments really are. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), in partnership with Genomics England, has launched an urgent deep-dive into potential genetic links, as public health officials scramble to understand whether the push for pharmaceutical quick-fixes has once again come at too high a cost.
