Israel has reportedly moved a step closer to something out of a nightmare: crocodile-lined prison moats. Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman has reclassified Nile crocodiles as “tended wild animals,” a change that could clear the way for far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s controversial push to use the reptiles in prison security, after regulators had earlier blocked the idea as legally impossible. The plan, aimed first at Ketziot Prison in the south, has sparked alarm over legality, safety and the brutal symbolism of putting crocodiles around facilities holding Palestinian prisoners.
