A Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, the MKD VYOM, was confirmed by UK Marine Trade Operations to be the first vessel struck by an Iranian uncrewed surface vessel (USV) during ongoing conflicts, marking a dangerous escalation in maritime threats near Oman. Initially believed to have been hit by a projectile, the attack on March 1 north of Muscat led to the crew’s evacuation and ongoing investigations, highlighting the increasing sophistication and deployment of USVs by Iranian-backed forces, following similar tactics used by Ukraine and Houthi rebels. This incident underscores the volatile security environment in critical shipping lanes amid heightened U.S.-Israel operations against Iran.
