Another young life has been extinguished in the nation’s capital as lawlessness runs unchecked and D.C.'s streets grow ever more dangerous. Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old Congressional intern and promising student from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was senselessly gunned down Monday night in a brazen shooting that left two others injured. Eric, who was serving the people of Kansas’ 4th District through Rep. Ron Estes’ office, was not even the intended target—merely another innocent victim caught in the crossfire of a city spiraling into chaos. As families mourn, as communities tremble, and as lawmakers express grief, the silence from local leadership on restoring law and order is deafening. A young man with a bright future and a kind heart is gone, yet the revolving door of violence and criminality remains wide open. Where is the accountability? Where is the safety for those who believe in public service? Washington, D.C. has become a tragic symbol of what happens when security is overshadowed by inaction.
