New Jersey lawmakers unanimously passed a bill aiming to tackle "period poverty" by mandating free menstrual products at public colleges and universities, addressing the financial strain many students face when choosing between basic essentials like food or period supplies—a hardship that disproportionately impacts students of color. The legislation, championed by state senators Angela McKnight and M. Teresa Ruiz, requires each institution’s president to form a task force within six months to evaluate student needs, distribution logistics, costs, and implementation timelines, following successful similar initiatives nationwide to boost health, safety, and student well-being.
