America’s fertility crisis just got worse. New federal data show the U.S. general fertility rate fell to a record low 53.1 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 in 2025, down from 53.8 a year earlier, as experts warn decades of decline are colliding with smartphones, falling marriage rates, abortion, birth control and reproductive technology. Analysts say the stakes are national, with calls to slash costs, cut red tape and improve fertility care before the birth slump becomes even harder to reverse.
