The guns and ammunition were found in Matthews’ home in Castle Douglas

A man who was caught with a cache of guns and ammunition which he claimed had been passed to him by his father has been jailed for five years.

Karl Matthews, 48, was jailed for five years after police discovered a cache of guns and ammunition in his Castle Douglas home, including a century-old, fully functional rifle and five handguns stored insecurely in his loft; despite his claim that the weapons were inherited from his late father, the judge rejected his plea for leniency and upheld the mandatory minimum sentence for possessing prohibited firearms.
