Father and daughter accused of peddling “lies on canvas” for years have now struck a guilty plea deal, after federal prosecutors said Erwin Bankowski, 50, and Karolina Bankowska, 26, tried to move more than 200 counterfeit artworks through the auction world using fake ownership histories and bogus claims tying them to famed contemporary artists. The case is a stark warning shot: both face up to 20 years in prison and as much as $1.9 million in restitution, with the FBI saying the pair exploited buyers and will be held accountable.
