EL-SAYED SLAMS SCHUMER, THEN GETS BACKING

Chuck Schumer just swallowed a political insult with a smile. The Senate Minority Leader offered a tepid endorsement of Michigan Senate hopeful Dr. Abdul El-Sayed even though El-Sayed has openly taken shots at him, saying Schumer has given Democrats “ample reason to question” whether he should keep leading and backing Sen. Chris Van Hollen for the top job instead. Schumer had already preferred El-Sayed’s opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, who lost by just 1% on Tuesday. But with control of the Senate hanging in the balance, the Democratic establishment is suddenly being forced to rally around the anti-establishment firebrand. Schumer and DSCC chair Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said they look “forward to working with Abdul and Democrats across Michigan to win this seat in November,” a classic mushy political embrace that one Democratic operative bluntly translated as simple survival: Schumer wants to win, even if El-Sayed is far from his ideal candidate.
