Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is moving fast to recast himself as a mainstream contender after a razor-thin Senate primary win, but his own words and baggage are already fueling a fierce political fight. On Meet the Press, El-Sayed cast Donald Trump as an “existential threat” and pressed his message of unity, even as critics seize on a trail of claims tying him and Barack Obama to the Muslim Brotherhood and on the fact that his wife reportedly does not take Medicare or Medicaid patients while he campaigns for Medicare for All. The media spotlight is now set — and the biggest question is whether El-Sayed can sell moderation, or whether the controversy overwhelms the pitch.
