A shocking new audit of Maryland's foster care system has unveiled a catastrophic failure in child safety, exposing the state’s Department of Human Services and its Social Services Administration to allegations of criminal negligence that put vulnerable children at risk. Over the course of several years, systemic problems allowed at least ten children to be placed in perilous environments with registered sex offenders, including one horrifying instance in which a convicted murderer was hired to provide direct care for kids in hotels. Delegate Kathy Szeliga (R) did not hold back her outrage, declaring the report “absolutely abhorrent” and calling for immediate accountability from Governor Wes Moore (D) and his administration, which has consistently ignored its own shortcomings. As county agencies neglected vital background checks and state officials rubber-stamped dangerous placements, Maryland is left grappling with severe penalties and a growing public outcry over its manifest failure to protect its most defenseless citizens. The urgency of reform could not be clearer; the future of countless children hangs in the balance.
