Republican representative Darrell Issa, whose southern California district was reconfigured following the passage of Proposition 50, has decided not to run for re-election.

“After a quarter-century in Congress – and before that, a quarter-century in business – it’s the right time for a new chapter and new challenges,” he said in a statement on Friday, the last day he would have been able to file as a candidate.

Republican Representative Darrell Issa, who has served southern California since 2001 and briefly retired in 2018 before returning in 2021, announced he will not seek re-election following the redrawing of his district under Proposition 50, which shifted it from a solid Republican lead to a slight Democratic advantage; despite opposing the measure and considering relocating to Texas to run there, Issa cited a desire for new challenges after a long career in business and politics as his reason to step down.
