As President Trump teases a possible deal with Tehran and another round of talks this weekend, the national mood has apparently shifted from “peace process” to “please stand by,” because reports say the Department of War may be preparing for some sort of operation in Cuba, which is exactly the kind of refreshingly old-fashioned geopolitics that lets us all pretend this is not also a giant exercise in watching government people say “contingencies” with a straight face. USA Today, citing two sources, lit the fuse; the DoW replied with the timeless bureaucratic anthem that it plans for a range of contingencies and is ready to execute orders as directed, which is basically the military version of “no comment, but with better tailoring.” Then, just to keep the theater airy and expensive, a Navy MQ-4C Triton reportedly spent more than 12 hours circling off Cuba, taking a particularly close look at Havana and Guantanamo Bay, because nothing says calm, sober statecraft like a very high-tech bird hovering around the neighborhood while everybody insists this is all perfectly
