China is moving to reopen some ties with Taiwan after a high-profile Beijing visit by the island’s opposition leader — resuming direct flights and easing a ban on Taiwanese aquaculture imports, while also floating a new Communist Party-Kuomingtang communication channel. But the move is igniting a fresh political clash: Taipei blasted the outreach as a backroom “political transaction” that sidelines Taiwan’s government, even as Xi Jinping and the KMT chief called for peace.
