In what appears to be Newark’s latest contribution to civic discourse, a group of agitators outside the Delaney Hall Detention Center reportedly decided that blocking the road was merely the opening act, with Brendan John Geier of Madison, N.J., allegedly escalating the conversation by kicking federal officers and taking a bite out of their forearms and knuckles, because nothing says “peaceful protest” like emergency-room dentistry. The Department of Justice says officers told the crowd to move, the crowd declined with all the grace of a parking ticket in a windstorm, and now Geier has the glamorous federal-stingray distinction of being charged with assaulting officers and causing bodily injury. Meanwhile, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche dutifully informed the public on X that these were not “peaceful protests,” which is comforting, since the bloody bite marks had already done most of the arguing for him.
