A tiny at-home headset is being sold as a new weapon against depression — and a possible alternative to Prozac and other SSRIs — but the big promise comes with big questions. Flow Neuroscience’s FL-100, cleared by the FDA in December, uses weak electrical currents to the brain and is already sold in Europe, yet the U.S. trial behind approval showed only modest gains on the main depression measure and “moderate” uncertainty over how well it really works. Supporters say it could reshape treatment; skeptics say the proof is still thin.
