Carl DeMaio is accusing California Attorney General Rob Bonta of trying to “rig” the November election after Bonta changed the ballot title on the Prop 39 Voter ID initiative at the last minute. DeMaio, a state assemblymember and one of the measure’s official proponent authors, blasted the move as a “blatant attempt to rig the November election,” saying the new wording is designed to discourage voters from approving the bipartisan measure. DeMaio says his campaign is now exploring “every legal avenue” to hold Bonta accountable for what he calls election tampering. He notes that the attorney general had already issued a ballot title for Prop 39 in September 2025, and that version appeared on initiative petitions signed by more than 1.3 million California voters to qualify the Voter ID proposal for this November’s ballot.
