Britain’s updated equality code has landed with a bang: under new guidance, single-sex public spaces across most of the UK must be used according to biological sex, not gender identity, a hardening of rules triggered by last year’s Supreme Court ruling and now in force despite fierce backlash from trans-rights groups and many MPs. The EHRC says the change covers toilets, changing rooms, gyms, cafes, sports clubs, hospital wards and shelters in England, Scotland and Wales — a shift supporters hail as overdue clarity, and critics warn will be nearly impossible to police and risks fresh discrimination.
