In a sweeping move that overrides the efforts of the Trump administration to uphold biological reality on official documents, a federal judge in Boston has blocked the government from requiring that U.S. passports reflect a person's biological sex. U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick expanded a previous ruling to cover not just the original six plaintiffs, but now a nationwide class of individuals whose self-declared gender identity differs from their biological sex. This decision effectively mandates that the State Department issue passports based on subjective gender identity—including an “X” designation—despite longstanding policies rooted in scientific and legal definitions of sex. Conservatives warn that this ruling not only undermines the integrity of government-issued identification but erodes the foundation of objective truth in public policy.
