America is barreling toward a demographic cliff: the national birth rate has sunk to about 1.56 births per woman, far below the 2.1 needed to replace the population, and the fallout could be brutal. Fewer babies now means fewer workers, fewer taxpayers, and more strain on Social Security, Medicare and a swelling welfare state later — a recipe for long-term economic weakness and social decay.
