San Francisco legal blast: a California attorney hit with a $1,000 sanction after citing three cases that do not exist, in a filing that reeked of AI hallucination and shook a fight over a fired BART worker’s vaccine refusal. Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson warned that AI may be used in legal advocacy only if lawyers independently verify every claim — a sharp shot across the bow as courtrooms brace for more fabricated citations, and the misstep could now jeopardize the case.
