A European Parliament fact-finding mission to the Canary Islands uncovered that about half of the migrants claiming to be unaccompanied minors were actually adults, exposing flaws in the initial age-screening process that often misplaces individuals in inappropriate centers. By August 2025, over 12,000 migrants had arrived, predominantly males, with systemic issues echoing across Europe where 92 percent of illegal migrants are male. The mission also spotlighted concerns over public safety, highlighting that migrants are disproportionately represented in prisons, sparking questions about the underlying causes of their higher incarceration rates relative to their population share.
