Trump’s State Department is slapping would-be immigrants with bonds of up to $250,000 in a new visa pilot, starting Tuesday and aimed first at some applicants from the Dominican Republic. Officials say the move targets those already deemed likely to become a “public charge” — in other words, a risk for taxpayer-funded benefits — and is meant to force proof they can support themselves. The message is blunt: no financial means, no easy entry.
