The White House is sounding the alarm on a 10 million-home shortage, blaming a tangle of regulations, fees, mandates and permitting delays for driving up construction costs and slamming the brakes on supply. The new 2026 Economic Report of the President says those “bureaucrat tax” burdens have helped push housing prices higher, with the gap far bigger than other recent estimates and California-style rules singled out as a prime culprit. President Trump also tied the crisis to illegal immigration, arguing the Biden era worsened costs and squeezed wages as Americans were left to fight over too few homes.
