Democrats are diving headfirst back into one of the very issues that helped sink them at the ballot box. At the DNC’s summer meeting in Austin, the party’s policy committee approved two new midterm resolutions: one to “reform” Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and another to abolish it altogether. It’s a bold move, or a reckless one depending on your view, especially after a national election that turned heavily on border security and immigration enforcement. The message from the committee seems to be that voters got it wrong two years ago — and Democrats intend to keep pressing ahead anyway. The DNC’s cash-strapped state may limit the size of the gamble, but not the symbolism: on immigration, the party is leaning in hard, not backing off.
