Debbie Wasserman Schultz has survived a bitter intraparty showdown, winning Tuesday night’s Florida House 20 Democratic primary after facing sharp backlash from Black Democrats over her bid in a majority-Black district. The longtime congresswoman, first elected in 2004, was pushed into the seat by redistricting and ran in territory once represented by Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who resigned after being indicted on fraud charges. The result ends one explosive fight, but the racial and political tensions behind it still hang over Florida Democrats.
