Republicans are once again discovering that governance is, inconveniently, a chain reaction: Kevin Warsh’s confirmation is stuck because Thom Tillis is threatening to jam it up until the Justice Department drops its probe of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, and now more GOP senators are piling on and basically asking the administration to please move the plot along. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the White House will eventually have to “deal with the committee” and with Tillis, while Sen. Mike Rounds said flatly that if they want Warsh, they’ll need to resolve the investigation first. In other words, the party is trying to install a new top economic official, but first has to get through the very modern obstacle course of a Senate revolt, a dangling probe, and one senator with a veto-sized grudge.
