In a powerful stand for tradition and national dignity, Germany’s conservative leader Friedrich Merz has thrown his support behind Bundestag President Julia Klöckner’s decision to reject the politicization of the country’s most symbolic institution. Amid mounting pressure to fly the rainbow flag over the historic Reichstag during Berlin's Pride celebrations—commonly known as Christopher Street Day—Klöckner drew a firm line, preserving the Parliament’s neutrality and gravitas. Echoing her stance, Merz declared on public television that “the Bundestag is not a circus tent,” refusing to turn the seat of German democracy into a billboard for social agendas. In an age where Western values are too often compromised for fleeting trends, this decision sends a clear message: Germany’s institutions are not political playthings, and its conservative leadership will not bend the knee to performative activism.
